2001: Don't Make the Police into an Arm of the INS
2004: Kids Shouldn’t Have to Flee L.A. to Have Hope

Immigration and Naturalization Service Commissioner James Ziglar announced in early December that the names of more than 300,000 immigrants scheduled for deportation will be entered into an FBI criminal database. This is to facilitate the identification by the police.

The inner city was my neighborhood. In the 1980s, when I was attending junior high school in South-Central Los Angeles, gang violence was common and respect for teachers was absent. Being a victim of senseless street conflict was something I worked to avoid.

2005: South Los Angeles Must Have Higher Political Visibility
2005: The Salvadoran Connection

Poor people are invisible, especially African Americans and Latinos who live in South-Central Los Angeles. This is not new; it has existed for decades. I grew up there and saw the injustices of poverty, poor housing, inadequate and unsafe school facilities and police brutality.

Re “L.A. Violence Crosses the Line,” May 15: I have just finished reading the article about Mara Salvatrucha gang violence. It comes as no surprise that extremely violent criminals find California a virtual utopia where they can operate freely with minimal risk.

2011: A forgotten story of compassion and salvation

It was more than a two-hour trip, but the 40-year-old activist wanted to get a “reality check” about the struggles that some people face on a daily basis by riding the bus and walking home. “I thought, ‘This is so exhausting,’” said Randy Jurado Ertll.

2023: Why I support Salvadoran President Bukele, the scourge of gangs and corrupt politicians

It’s no secret that I support Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador. A few years ago, for all intents and purposes, I had no clue who Bukele was. He did come to the 2015 Day of the Salvadoran event in Los Angeles, but I missed seeing or meeting him.
